Causes of Middle School Dropouts in District Kulgam of Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract

The present study has been carried out on the causes of middle school dropouts in the district Kulgam of Jammu and Kashmir. Some of the main reasons for discontinuing school can be classified as; family-related reasons, school-related reasons, and personal reasons. Most government schools lack infrastructure there is a lack of teachers and such schools are not accessible to the people. One of the major problems is illiterate parents; they don’t send their children to school. The sample consisted of 50 dropouts and one of their parents. Simple random sampling was used for the selection of the sample. To get information from the study interview schedule and a self-developed questionnaire was used. The data obtained were compiled and analyzed using simple statistics. The study shows the total dropout of the students and the causes responsible for the dropout problem. The study also shows the role of teachers, parents, and government authorities tackling in this problem.
