India is an agricultural country. Since ancient times, farming has been the main and traditional foundation of people’s lives. Across the country, agricultural activities have been carried out primarily in the context of addressing the problem of food grains. Rajasthan, known as the land of deserts, has historically struggled with food shortages. The crisis of food security has remained a serious issue throughout the state. In the Shekhawati region too, particularly in rural areas, agriculture has served both as a means of livelihood and as a way to cope with the shortage of food grains. In Jhunjhunu district of the Shekhawati region, farming has traditionally been carried out with the objective of meeting local food requirements, while also supporting rural livelihoods. Instead of focusing on commercial purposes, emphasis has generally been placed on the production of crops that ensure food security for the people. Over time, however, changes in agriculture have also brought changes in crop production. Today, farming is no longer limited to food crops alone, but also includes crops that provide income and fulfill other needs of life, with an increasing focus on profitability.
